Easter baskets are a fun tradition for kids, no matter how old they are. I like to choose baskets that can still be useful after the holiday. Every time we turn around there is another holiday happening that involves candy. Because of this, I am always on the lookout for non-candy options. Check out the gift guides below for plenty of treats that are not candy. See the end of the post for more fun and meaningful traditions. This post does contain affiliate links.
Choosing the right Basket for the right kid
Like I said above, I love a basket that can be reused after the holiday. Either in the kid’s room or I may use it somewhere else in the house after they have forgotten about the basket. Honestly, my kids couldn’t care less about the basket. Your kids may want to keep it. If so, make it fit the theme of their room so it can be used for organization after the fun stuff is gone. You do not even have to use a basket. One year I used an open upside-down umbrella. Another option would be a pair of new boots filled with candy and small toys. A baseball cap filled with baseball cards and their favorite candy. Here are some fun and functional options for using a basket I found on Amazon.

What to fill the basket with?
I like to include a book to read, coloring or activity book, stuffed animal and stuffed eggs. Candy is of course expected but I don’t go overboard. We usually attend an easter egg hunt or two so candy is not on short supply. Each image below has links for the items pictured. I try to keep my baskets under $100 a piece, including the basket. This year I’m going to try to keep them around $50 each. Stay tuned on Instagram stories. I will post updates there.

Easter in our house
Each year the kids wake up to a trail of easter eggs leading from their bedroom to a letter left by easter bunny that leads them on a scavenger hunt to find their Easter baskets. I usually go online and through a quick Google search I find clues that I think would be fun for my kids. This year I decided to make my own. Below are some tips on how to get started, and a printable scavenger hunt you may print and use for free.
Create an engaging Easter basket scavenger hunt with these simple steps:
- Clue Creation:
- Write a series of clues leading from one location to another.
- Incorporate Easter-themed riddles or hints related to the hiding spots.
- Initial Clue Placement:
- Start with an initial clue that hints at the location of the first Easter basket or a small treat.
- Consider placing the first clue in a common area to kick off the scavenger hunt.
- Hide Easter Baskets:
- Distribute Easter baskets or small treats at each location mentioned in the clues.
- Ensure the hiding spots are age-appropriate and safe.
- Varied Locations:
- Make the scavenger hunt more interesting by including a mix of indoor and outdoor locations.
- Utilize different rooms or even the backyard.
- Easter-Themed Challenges:
- Integrate simple Easter-themed challenges or games at each location, like solving a puzzle or finding a specific Easter decoration.
- Team or Individual Play:
- Decide whether the scavenger hunt will be a collaborative effort among family members or an individual pursuit. We do ours first thing in the morning so we usually do a group hunt.
- Final Surprise:
- Lead participants to a final clue that reveals the location of a grand Easter basket or a special surprise.
- Tailor to Ages:
- Adjust the difficulty level of the clues and challenges based on the age group of the participants.
- Capture the Moment:
- Encourage participants to take photos or videos at each location to document the fun.
- Celebrate Together:
- Once the scavenger hunt is complete, gather everyone to celebrate with a shared treat or activity.
Remember to tailor the scavenger hunt to the preferences and ages of those participating, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable Easter activity for all involved.
Here is the one I made for this year

I hope this article is helpful. Also, be kind to yourself. Some Easter’s I do more than others. Life has its ups and downs. Good days/years and bad ones. This is just simply inspiration or even motivation to do something simple but special for the littles in your life. While they are little. My oldest is 14 this year! It has not escaped me that he will not be as excited about the bunny this year.
If money is tight this year, focus on bulk packages of items that you can split up amongst the baskets like sidewalk chalk, sticker books, bubbles etc. The dollar store has very similar items if amazon is too expensive for you right now. These gift guides are shoppable but they can also just serve as inspiration.
He has risen! The Story of Jesus
We are Christians in our household so we also will read the passages associated with Easter and discuss why we celebrate the Easter season. My oldest 2 kids (12,14) are watching the TV series “The Chosen”. This series came highly recommended by my pastor. It will probably not captivate a younger crowd but my 12-year-old is enjoying it. I first showed it to my 14-year-old when he was 11 or 12 as well.
Some no-cost options for littles would be talking to them about the story of Jesus while doing coloring pages or small art projects. HERE is a link for free coloring pages. Going to church is always free and is good for the soul. Sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right one but it is always worth it in the end.
What to wear!
Up next on the blog will be a roundup of outfits for the whole family for Easter. Until then, here is my post on closet staples that has some great spring options and links!
